Katie Bowdring: Building Confidence and a Career in Carpentry

Entering the skilled trades later in life takes courage—and the right support. For Katie Bowdring, a mentee in BCCA’s Building Builders program, mentorship provided not just guidance, but reassurance, confidence, and a clear path forward.

After completing the Foundation Carpentry program at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, Katie joined Building Builders while actively seeking work. Paired with her mentor, Christopher Bahris, she found a safe, supportive space outside the job site to ask questions about tools, skills, and navigating the realities of construction work. With access to tools and PPE through the program, Katie secured employment during her mentorship journey.

As a single mother of four transitioning into the trades from another industry, Katie credits the program with helping her overcome uncertainty and stay grounded during moments of challenge.

“I am so grateful for the opportunity that the BCCA Building Builders program has offered me. Having a mentor to help with questions and concerns, to hear me out, and to reassure me that things will work out has been a true gift.” — Katie Bowdring, BCCA Building Builders Mentee

Katie is building a stronger future for herself and her family—one skill, one step, and one job at a time.
